Is social media one of those things that's just going to come and go with time? Hardly not. Even though at the moment it's still in its infant stages, it definitely doesn't look like it's going to be disappearing any time soon. Saying that it's going to disappear is like saying that Facebook is one day going to vanish, or even a website like Google. They are so entrenched in our culture that the words themselves have become verbs, i.e. "Let's Google it", or "I'll Facebook you". Does anyone actually have a social media strategy that works for them and is actually quantifiable? I have some suggestions as to how you make it effective.
1. Build a "tribe"
Social media means that you have to be social. People who see it as another tool for getting people to spam offers are not utilizing it to its greatest extent. The biggest issue with online marketing is that people find it hard to trust anyone. If you're willing to get out there and be social, going so far as to show your face online, you're doing something that a lot of other people don't do, hence differentiating yourself.
If you want to put offers out there and have people buy from you over and over again, you need to be trusted. If you want to be trusted, use social media as a way to show that you're real.
2. Plug into your sales funnels
A popular social media strategy that a lot of people have already caught on to is using them as an entry point into their sales funnels. I'm not going so far as to say that social media is going to replace squeeze pages and the like, but it's an alternative that may be suitable for other people.
For example, if you've built up a good following in Twitter, having an introductory offer in your profile could be a great way of connecting your "tribe" to your sales funnel. This way, you're turning visitors who aren't paying anything into paying customers who you can lead through the funnel.
3. Joint Ventures
Most people don't have the guts to put themselves online and being so open like that. If you're running any sort of real business and you're constantly pushing your image out there for people to see, other marketers who are in the same niche as you are going to want to partner up to increase profits for both of you.
You could also actively go out and search for marketers in your niche instead of waiting for them to come to you; having a web presence that's powered by social media means that your visitors/customers become fiercely loyal to you (if you offer top-notch products/services). If you approach someone for a JV and they know that you're a big player in the niche, they probably aren't going to turn you down.
